THE FAMOUS PADILLAs OF PHILIPPINE CINEMA

SERIES ON THE “GIANTS” NO. 4:
ANG PAMOSONG PADILLA SA PELIKULANG PILIPINO

By Ross F. Celino, Jr.

No. 11, April 20, 1981

Aba, star!!!

What is Philippine movies without mentioning this great and talented clan who, for more that five decades, since the early 1930’s, had graced the silver screen with their charms, charisma, pulchritude, machochism and all that jazz…Siyempre bahagi sila ng isang makulay at makasaysayang daigdig ng aninong gumagalaw at karapat-dapat lamang ang pagbibigay sa kanila ng kaukulang pansin at tribute tulad nito…

Soon, he ran for senator but he lost. On the next election, he again ran for governor of his province and won the second time around.

“Kung mahal ng tao ang aming papa,” pagtatapat ni Ateng (Osorio) tungkol sa kanilang ugat, “this could be because he was a very humble man. Very compassionate and always ready to help the poor, the less fortunate. “Papa was very much against the acting career of both Leleng and Pempe,” Ateng went on to say, “and when he could not stop them, he, too, became an artista. “Of course, yong mga character roles ang kanilang ginampanan,” she continued.

“It was also Papa who encouraged Pempe to join the Tokyo Oriental Boxing Federation in 1931 where he won in the Jr. Featherweight Division. Leleng could not join Pempe at that time because he was busy doing “Lilies of Benguet.” But towards 1932 at the Olympics held in Los Angeles, USA, both Leleng and Pempe represented the Philippines and again in the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin, Germany.

But it was the Hungarian boxer who won over Pempe and this brought about boos and cat calls from the gallery. But Papa who was all the while with Pempe and Leleng went up the stage to pacify the crowd. The decision of the referees prevailed.

“After this, Pempe turned professional boxer. He won in one of the two fights he ever joined and lost in another and soon he concentrated on the movies from then on,” Ateng further revealed.

“But Papa was really a nice guy. He did not receive his salaries as provincial executive and even as a representative of the First District of Bulacan. He was also a hardworking man, something we are all proud of, kaya hindi dapat pagtakhan kung kami man ay nagmana rin sa kanyang sipag, tiyaga and his renowned humility and compassion for the poor,” dagdag pa ni Ateng.

Mama Ateng. Lola Ateng. Aling Ateng. Or just plain Ateng.

This was in 1937.

Una niyang pinamahalaan ang “Dalagang Luksa” which was supposed to have been the directorial assignment of Leleng but for one reason or another, he resigned. But he recommended his sister Ateng to take over and that was the start of her directorial career. This pic did very well and this was soon followed by more lachrymal pictures: Dolores”, “Pagsuyo” for Sampaguita Pictures, “Magmamani!” but then the war broke out.

Immediately after Liberation, Ateng directed “Bakya Mo Neneng” for Premiere Productions which up to now is still unsurpassed having been shown for 26 days with an averagetake of not less than P10,000 a day when orchestra tickets were at P1.20 only. Ito pa rind aw ang kauna-unahang pelikulang Tagalog, pagkatapos ng giyera, na ipinalabas sa MalacaƱang sa kahilingan na rin mismo ng Unang Ginang noon na si Mrs. Trinidad de Leon-Roxas, intrigued she must have been over what made the picture click and be played continuously as it did.

After working in the movies for so long since 1937, lumipat ang beauty ni Ateng sa telebisyon at ditto nakatulong siya ni Mitos Villareal sa mga programang pinamahalaan nito: Salamisim”, “Panagimpan”, “An Evening with Pilita”, “Oh, Rosemarie!”, “Aawitan Kita”, “That Young Image”, “Ang Biyenan Kong Mangkukulam” at marami pang iba. There was even a time when Ateng was doing 6 shows a day in different channels and stations.

Ngayon, paminsan-minsan na lamang sumusulat si Ateng. Still strong and able at 74 (she was born Sept. 1, 1907), dumating na marahil sa kanya ang pagkasawa – or is it fulfillment already?—sa naging bahagi ng kanyang buhay ang daigdig ng pelikula.

Though she did not receive any award for her pictures, except the Lou Salvador Memorial Award from FAMAS two years ago, Ateng is nonetheless very happy that whoeverhad worked with her had invariably become her friends – Armida Siguion-Reyna, Mitos Villareal, Jeanne Young, Susan Roces down the line.

“But if you ask me what made me very happy and fulfilled, it was when I saw the three faces of my son, Bebong, arranged in a triangle, in front of the Welfareville when he made the picture, “Boys Town”, as a child star.

Palibhasa’y iilan lamang ang mga artista noon, kung kaya’t there were some pictures wherein the Padilla brothers had their sister, Maria Clara Ruiz, as their leading lady and love interest.

Matuk mo ito, Manay! Di parang incest, di ba? But it happened.

At ganoon din si Leleng, but of course….

Ngmga de-bigote’s mahihilig sa paghuhubad diyan beside Leleng and Pempe.

Suwabe ang kanilang pagka-macho. Hindi pilit, hindi sinasadya. Sadyang nagmumula sa loob. From within and not from without. Natural. Spontaneous and really oozing with sex.

Between the two, Pempe lasted longer than Leleng. This was because Leleng was a victim of heart attack that had paralyzed him for eleven (11) agonizing years from the waist down. He died in the early part of 1963.

All the while, Jose Padilla, Jr. blazed through the screen as the swashbuckling, romantic hero; nakaipon siya ng libu-libong (or is millions?) tagahanga at tagasubaybay. Or better yet, with Fernando Poe, Jr. who came ahead of Chris.

There was even a time in local cinema that he was the confirmed highest paid actor. Buick, Pontiac, Chevy. Laging dalawang magkapareho, magkakulay. Kung Chevy, okey, dalawang Chevy ang bibilhin. Parehong kulay. Pareho ang make. At lagging magkasunod sa kanyang mga lakad.

Matuk mo itis, Manay! May style, di ba? Wiz, Manay, wiz. At ito pa:

During lunch breaks, Pempe would excuse himself from his director and motor all the way from his shooting (kesehoda kung sa Bulacan ito) to Lipa, Batangas for just a – hold your breath – karera ng gagamba! Say!

At that time, one kilo of pork and beef was only P1.25, o P1.28 kung magtaas ang mga tindera sa palengke. One ganta, take note, hindi isang litro tulad ngayon.

But Pempe was like that, playful with his money. Na parang laruan lamang. And yet, though already a big star, he never showed he wanted star treatment or priority of privileges and favors. Hindi baleng langawin siya sa shooting! He never complained. This was one good trait he had.

Contrary to earlier reports, Pempe died a rich man with honor and among friends. Who sez one can never be a hero in his own hometown? When Pempe died, he was mourned by his own townmates who came en masse to his funeral. Even the mayor of Plaridel, Bulacan, Mayor Amado Buhain, supervised the ceremonies for Pempe at the town hall. It was a sight to see how a town hero so loved and respected by his own people was mourned and esteemed! And yet, people were quick to say that he died a pauper. Pempe never begged. He didn’t have to. The Padillas are neither very rich nor very poor. Well-to-do, yes. But not poor.

ROY AT NANING: THE OTHER BROTHERS

ROY PADILLA and NANING PADILLA are brothers who made good in their line of work. Roy is a labor leader, the first Asian to be elected Chairman of the International Union of Mine Workers. Because of this, he became an adopted son of Larap, Camarines Norte where he was practically forced to run as town mayor. When finally he acquiesced, he won by the biggest majority ever recorded in the town history. Not contented with this, he was again asked to run as vice governor of Camarines Norte which he won uncontested.

So you see, Roy followed the footsteps of his illustrious father, Gov. Jose Padilla. As a Padilla, he didn’t entirely turn his back on showbiz. He produced under the banner of Champion Films and even directed a movie, “Marcelino Pan Y Vino”. At another time, he was also a technician at the old Premiere Productions where he was elected president of the union of workers.

Roy was also a Commissioner of the Social Security System who was appointed by President Marcos and whose appointment was by-passed by Congress but who was again reappointed by the President himself.

Brother Mariano, on the other hand, was first an assistant director and soon a full-fledged director of Dayang-Dayang Productions owned by Amado Cortez, another brother. When this folded up, Naning put up his own Padilla Film Arts which specializes in commercial ads. Now it is one of the biggest in the business.

ARSENIA FRANCISCO, GREGORIO FERNANDEZ AT GLORIA SEVILLA: THE IN-LAWS

When we mentioned the Padillas of Philippine movies, hindi natin maiiwasan na hindi banggitin sina DR. GREGORIO FERNANDEZ, bayaw; ARSENIA FRANCISCO at GLORIA SEVILLA, asawa at hipag.

As a director, Gregorio Fernandez was awarded by the FAMAS for his work in LVN Pictures’ “Higit Sa Lahat”, a Rogelio de la Rosa-Emma Alegre starrer. Not only was he cited by the FAMAS but also by the Asian Film Festival in 1954 when this same picture romped away with the Best Picture Award. That was also the year Pres. Ramon Magsaysay presented director Fernandez with a presidential plaque for his unique contribution in placing the Philippines in the acetate map among Asian countries.

The most memorable of all was the original “Gulong ng Palad” in 1949 which they starred in after some years of estrangement and the picture was an attempt at reconciliation but to no avail. The pic made thousands at the tills considering that it was produced at no less than sixty thousand pesos only. Parang talent fee lamang ngayon ng pangkaraniwang artista, di ba, misis?

But “Gulong ng Palad” was a big, big box-office hit that once more the Pempe-Seniang loveteam became the favorite. “Gulong….” Was soon followed by “Ginto sa Lusak” and many more and though separated, they remained good friends till the end.

Naging aktibo rin sa pagganap si Seniang. And in one of her later pictures, “Huwag Mo Akong Limutin” for People’s Pictures under the helm of Manong Gerry de Leon, she won the FAMAS Best Supporting Actress in 1960. This was one picture considered at the time as a bold picture not only visually but more so in theme: that of an adulteress, the role delineated by Seniang. Not long after this, she died of cancer.

But as Amado’s wife, Glo had produced several motion pictures and TV programs under the Cortez-Ranillo banner with such pics as “Darling, Buntis Ka Na Naman” with Nora Aunor and Mat Ranillo III, “Mangkukulam Ang Aking Biyenan”, “Mommy Ko Si Mayor” and soon “Tama Na, Mommy”, all under the direction of Amado Cortez.

Parehong magandang lahi!

THE OTHER PADILLAs

Kabilang sa the other Padillas sina AMADO CORTEZ (Arsenio Padilla ang tunay niyang pangalan), PILAR PADILLA, CRISTINA ARAGON (Violeta Padilla in real life) at kapatid nitong sina ANGIE at OSCAR.

Sa mga ito, aktibo hanggang kamakailan si Amado (until he migrated to the States with his wife, Gloria Sevilla not long ago) at Bob Padilla. Madz was elected QC councilor before the advent of Martial Law. Isa ring prodyuser-direktor. Natatandaan pa ba ninyo ang Filmmakers, Inc. at ang kanilang “Pantalan 13”, “5 Anino Ni Bathala”, “Takdang Sandali” at iba pa?

As an actor, Madz won the FAMAS Best Supporting Actor in 1971 for his role in Virgo Films’ “Bakit Ako Pa?” – the same picture Rita Gomez garnered her second Best Actress trophy. Earlier, Madz was also nominated by the FAMAS for Best Actor for “Pantalan 13” produced by his own film firm and directed by him.

Bob Padilla, on the other hand, still finds time doing bit and character roles for the movies.

Bob’s last film assignment was in FPJ Productions’ “…At Muling Nagbaga ang Lupa” where he played one of the boys, ika nga.

Apparently, they believe in the dictum that enough’s enough. Or that a few Padillas in the business would already suffice. And Rudy is doing tremendously well in continuing the good and gamous name ablaze on the movie horizon.

Cristina was a femme fatale in her days. Siya yaong Valentina sa “Darna” ni Rosa del Rosario. And she fitted well into the role like a pair of gloves. After this, she appeared in some so-so pictures and then left the scene as fast as she came in.

In fact, Angie appeared only in a few pictures, busy as she was then with her studies at the UST, where she was a classmate of this writer in one or two subjects.

Ganun…

And Pilar was a good actress in her days even without really trying. Totoo at berdadera. Mahusay gumanap. Mahusay magdala ng papel, kahit pang-kontrabida lamang. At least, Pilar made people grit their teeth and clench their fists for being wicked the way she was on screen then. A homewrecker, a husband snatcher down the line.

CARLOS PADILLA, JR.

But it was Sonny who went on with his movie career, samantalang si Nonny ay maagang nag-retire.

One of his most memorable films was “Currimao” of Ilocandia Productions where he did not only star in but also directed. His sister, Delia Dolor, was also featured in the movie. Aside from this, Sonny also did a scintillating performance in FPJ Productions’ “Asedillo” where he played the role of a PC soldier responsible for apprehending the outlaw. This was under the helm of Celso Ad. Castillo before the birth of the Messiah. For this role, Sonny won a FAMAS nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1971 but eventually lost out to Eddie Garcia.

When Sonny thought that he had no more chance in the movies – age was catching up with him already – he decided to branch out elsewhere. Fortunately for him, coming as he does from a family of boxers and pugilists – his father Leleng was a 1936 Olympic participant in boxing and his uncle Pempe was a medalist in the Oriental Boxing Federation in Tokyo in 1931 – Sonny became a professional referee without any difficulty. Boxing fans perhaps still remember Sonny as the one who officiated in the now famous “Thrilla in Manila” some scant years back when Muhammad Ali retained his world heavyweight champion title against challenger Joe Frazier. So good and unbiased Sonny must have been in that fight that he was soon accepted as a member of good standing in the American Professional Referee Association. His latest officiating was the controversial (if a big letdown?) championship bout between Roberto Duran of Panama and Sugar Ray Leonard of the United States which was halted on the 8th round because of the champion’s failing condition.

Sonny is now an American resident and will soon take his citizenship a few years from now. Reportedly, he is doing very well there and has totally forsaken – and expectedly shaken off? – whatever stardust he might have had in his system.

Again, Sonny is running true to form as a Padilla since they are exponents and lovers of professional boxing – if not busy actingin films – that they are. And surely there has to be someone among them to perpetuate their name and tradition in this field.

Si Mel (Adolfo Scheerer, Jr.) ay naging bida na rin sa mga pelikula tulad ng Oriental Motion Pictures’ “Mission Order 707” with Ruby Regala; Stagecoach Productions’ “Saranggani” and Victorino-Romero Productions’ “Vice Squad” with Maggie de la Riva as his leading lady and in some Mirick Films productions and other companies.

Otherwise, he is contented with his present life. Less conflicts, less controversies daw…

But being an ambitious girl, she must have dreamed of bigger things – the reason she went in and out of the movies several times. At one time, she was Cora Santos. At another, she was Cora Varona after a short hiatus.

But Fate had a different design for Cora. She died in 1971 at a tender age, leaving a dream unfulfilled. Tragic enough that she was young as she was then, she had yet to have her big break in the movies.

But then that is showbiz for you…Kaya nga ba’t dalawa ang mukha ng maskara sa showbiz. Isang masaya’t isang malungkot. But still the show must go on.

For his part, Bebong Osorio is still very much around. Though he started out as a child actor (Bebong used to portray the young Efren Reyes, Sr.), he rose to character roles as he grew up. His most memorable film as a child was in “Boys Town” where he played a waif. Now he’s more involved as an associate director not only in movies but also in television.

And he proved to be a hardworking, dedicated worker. Again, this is another trademark of the Padillas.

So far, okey ang lahat ngayon kay Bebong. Walang problema. May trabaho. Busy kung minsan but there is always time for fun and good times. Just like any normal, hardworking young man.

Bella (Belle Lopez) was a starlet at LVN Studios at the time Mila Ocampo, Perla Bautista, Lourdes Medel, Bernard Bonnin, Luz Valdez, Robert Campos, Chona Sandoval, Marita Zobel, Lou Salvador and their ilk were starting out to make names for themselves in tinseltown. So back to her studies.

Then Merle came in. She made a loud bang with her coming, reigning as she did then as the screen’s foremost sex symbol, second only to none. Merle was the first bold star who dictated her asking price. She was the first bold star who kept a battery of publicity (men and women) around her.

She came in style and others tried to imitate her but nobody dared come within her vicinity. Merle is the one and only when it came to purring pussycat roles.

Mula noong 1967 hanggang 1971, bumandila ang pangalang Merle Fernandez. Namukod. Natangi. At least sa kanyang department as the country’s No. 1 Sex Symbol. Among her most memorable films were “Uhaw”, “Hayok”, and “Busog” which made a millionaire out of the producer, young businessman, Ruben Abalos of Adroit Films.

Then Estrella Pictures, FPJ Productions’ sister company, availed of Merle’s services and charms and she was cast as the scheming Rizza in “Durando”, opposite Andy Poe. Needless to say, the pic established Merle Fernandez as the First Citizen of Tomatoland.

Then came Rudy Fernandez, the current heart throb of many lonely hearts. His coming was not much of a bang. But in the end, Rudy came out the victor. Now he’s one of the few-in-demand, most sought-after action stars of the country.

It was in MBM Pictures’ “Bitayin Si Baby Ama” where Rudy made people recognize his potential as an actor of the first order. Hindi lamang bilang aktor kundi bilang isang box office drawer na matatawag ngayong one of the bankable stars of Philippine movies.

Meanwhile, Rudy’s movie career is continuously riding high and as the years go by ay lalong naging established actor itong poging anak ng nasirang direktor na si Yoyong Fernandez. And of course, there is also big sister Merle who had influenced his life to a great extent. Ang totoo, paboritong kapatid ni Merle si Rudy and the feeling, it is mentioned, is mutual.

Samantala, Rudy is kept busy with his numerous movie assignments from different companies.
All these buttress the fact that Rudy is certainly going great guns insofar as his movie career is concerned.

To him goes the credit of having paired with practically all the big names of current day cinema, from Alma Moreno to Rio Locsin; from Cherie Gil to Amy Austria; from Lorna Tolentino to Jean Saburit; from Julie-Ann Fortich to Pia Moran; from Gina Alajar to Charo Santos and to just everyone who’s making waves in Philippine movies.

At that, Rudy Fernandez can well be the star, nay, as the actor to contend with. In fact, he almost romped away with the FAMAS Best Actor Award for his brilliant portrayal of the title role in “Star?” of Agrix Films but lost out by a mere point to Mat Ranillo III in 1978. And again, the following year, 1979, Rudy was once more a strong contender for the same category but lost out eventually to Fernando Poe, Jr. by a few votes.

Would 1980 be a lucky year for Rudy Fernandez? Would he be blessed and can he recoup lost grounds in the next coming awards night to be held in May this year for performances in the year past?

“Kung mangyayari ito,” pagtatapat ni Rudy, “I would perhaps be the happiest person on earth. Kasi nga, pangarap ko na ang magka-award, to prove that I was not wrong in the choice of my profession. Lalo pa nga kung iisiping I come from the Padilla and Fernandez clans na pawang mga premyado rin naman nung kapanahunan nila.

This is my job and I want to go on with it for as long as there are people who trust me, for as long as there are people who believe in me,” pagwawakas ni Rudy sa kanyang paglalahad.

ZARZUELA, ATBP. #1 - MINDA MORA

THE PHILIPPINE ASEAN CULTURAL - GOODWILL TOUR

(Jakarta, Indonesia; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore, Singapore & Bangkok, Thailand)
(April 19-June 7, 1981)

In 1981, the Zarzuela Foundation of the Philippines (under Ka Doroy Valencia) launched a project called “The Philippine ASEAN Cultural-Goodwill Tour", the biggest ever done by an ASEAN member-country, bringing Filipino culture to fellow ASEAN countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The project aims to emphasize the strong cultural affinities of the ASEAN heritage; to present the Muslim dances of the Philippines, “Minda Mora”, the zarzuela about Christian-Muslim relations, Philippine paintings, slides, films and other things about the Philippines. The 234-strong Philippine ASEAN Cultural Outreach Troupe, composed of singers, musicians, set technicians, electricians, cooks, cameramen, photographers and the Zarzuela staff left the country aboard BRP Sierra Madre, a transport vessel of the Philipppine Navy on April 20, 1981.

I was very lucky to be a part of the “Minda Mora” zarzuela group under the chorale ensemble and experienced the joy of travelling and performing with Filipino artists like Tribung Pinoy members Gloria Dizon-Coronel, Vladimir Valera, Erlinda Azcuna, and Lulu Francisco; and Fides Cuyugan-Asencio, Robert Natividad, Elmo Makil and Nanette Moscardon . For more than two months, we gained friends and accolades from the countries we performed, the first stop was in Jakarta, Indonesia where we had 3 performances in Radio Republik Indonesia from April 30-May 2; the next stop in Singapore where we had 2 performances in Victoria Theater and Memorial Hall from May 13 and May 14; 2 performances in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in Petalin Jaya Civic Centre (May 19) and University of Malaya (May 20); 2 performances in Bangkok, Thailand, in National Theater (May 29) and Thammasat State University (May 30).

Along with the Minda Mora group were the Dayang Dayang Filipinas Dance Troupe, composed of our young Muslim brothers and sisters, who offered a selected repertoire of traditional dances from Southern Philippines; and the UP Consort of Voices, a vocal chamber music organization composed of thirteen singers belonging to various scholastic disciplines. - James de la Rosa

THE INCREDIBLE MUHLACHs OF R.P. MOVIES

SERIES ON THE GIANTS: NO. 2
THE INCREDIBLE MUHLACHs OF R.P. MOVIES

By Nap C. Alip

Source: Jingle Extra HotMovie Entertainment Magazine
No. 9, April 6, 1981

The local movie industry will be virtually incomplete without mentioning the Muhlach clan. Since the mid-fifties up to the present, the ever intriguing Amalia Fuentes has never ceased creating waves, closely followed by her super moppet nephew NiƱo Muhlach. Liezl, Allan Ronald, Cheng and Alex Muhlach have their share of fame, fortune an controversies so much so that you cannot talk of one without speaking of the rest, so to say.

But how well doew the public know them? All these years every move of the Muhlach family has been magnified in print and in words. Still, many things have remained unsaid about them, especially their unguarded and private moments. Having practically seasoned and matured professionally in more than ten years of working with the Muhlachs, I’m lucky indeed to be among the few whom the Muhlachs consider a trusted confidante. Somehow, somewhere along the way, I can’t help but fully size them up individually.

QUEEN AMALIA FUENTES: THE BIG SISTER

Long before I became close to Nena, the impression that she was too strong in character struck in my mind. “Mangingilag ka at magkakaroon ng inferiority kapag kaharap si Amalia,” not a few echoed about Nena then. For that matter, the first time I interviewed Nena I made it a point to be prepared to the teeth. “Baka mapahiya ako,” I told myself. Contrary to what I expected, Nena was so accommodating that our conversation lasted for hours. Her straightforwardness, wit and sense of values touched me. Even that time, the way she treated me, how she showered me with advice and pointers truly elucidated her big sister image.

Not surprisingly, during the time I was already under the employ of her AM outfit, the big and small things Nena did to Alex and Cheng and to her four half-brothers all the more pointed out to the fullest her very loving attitude.

“Alam, noong maliliit pa kami nina Alex at Cheng ay parang tatay at nanay na nila ako. Never nga akong makapanood ng sine. Siguro kaya di ako nagdaan sa pagka-teenager. Iyon bang may crush to this and that o kaya’y gusting bumili ng ganito’t ganoon.

“But I have to admit na kahit kalian di ako nagkaroon ng inferiority complex. Come to think of it, my confidence helped and pushed me to where I am now,” Amalia often intimated to me.

Oftentimes, I remember Nena dropping by AM office just to greet Alex and Cheng, bringing along merienda and other food stuffs. She was always a big sister through and through. What amazed me was her over excitement everytime Alex and Cheng would notch their birthday. Nena always threw a bash in a plushy eatery in Ongpin and acted like she was the celebrant.

You should see Nena unleash her temper when provoked. Typically Muhlach, many wre the times Nena lost her cool if her brothers caught her ire.

“Talagang ganoon ako magalit. Sigaw dito, sigaw doon.

He is the stoic type. He keeps his feelings intact. Unlike Cheng who’s demonstrative like me. Madali ring uminit ang ulo but also easy to cool off,” says Nena.

With the emergence of NiƱo Muhlach as the hottest child star, the twist turned unfavorably for the Muhlachs. It was a shocker to learn one day that Nena, whom everybody knew then had only eyes for the welfare of Alex and Cheng, broke ties with the two. Suddenly, the brothers formed their own outfit named D’Wonder Films. How did Nena take the said tiff?

To this day, I can still vividly recall what was inside Nena’s heart that time. A week or so after the supposed split with Alex and Cheng, I had a long chat with Nena on the set of her starrer “Babaing Hiwalay sa Asawa:”

“It’s really painful on my part. Ang masakit sa akin, itinyempo nilang ganituhin ako at the time na NiƱo made it big at the box office. Natural na I’d be glad dahil in more ways than one, NiƱo will be a big help sa aming family.

“About Rebecca Rocha, ever since Alex knew my feelings towards her. Personally, I’ve nothing against her. Kaya lang, pinag-aral ko si Alex at pinag-abroad pa so that he could find a better partner for him. I mean, it’s but natural na mag-expect ako na isang titulada at may sinasabi ang kanyang mapapangasawa. But they can not say na inapi ko si Becky dahil dib a kinukuha ko siya sa movies ng AM, pati nga ang mommy nito na si Nela Alvarez.

“What I’m fighting for is the principle involved, not the monetary considerations. Mahirap magsalita ng tapos kaya let the future decide.” Those were the words of Nena few years back.

Now in the thick of filming of “Dirty Games” her first starrer after a year of absence, Nena epitomizes a much more contented woman whose unbeatable looks and brains have matured gracefully.

“Look, what I told you before about Alex and Cheng still holds true presently. Oh yes, there are some changes. Wala na ang sobrang sama ng loob ko, wala na rin ang word war naming and once in a while, nagkikita-kita kami nina Alex at nag-uusap kami ng pormal. But everything is not back to normal yet. The future will decide. Although aminado ako na pag may balita against Alex and Cheng, ako ang unang nasasaktan. Iba talaga ang magkakapatid, no matter what,” Amalia disclosed.

It was not an easy climb to stardom for Amalia Fuentes. But her success story serves as all-time inspiration for movie fans who yearn to make it big as stars. Sometime in 1955, Amalia Muhlach was among the thousands of diehards who joined Holiday in Movieland, a whole day affair sponsored by Sampaguita, LVN and Premiere studios.

While inside the Sampaguita compound, Amalia was discovered, leading to her inking an exclusive contract. After a minor role as a fairy godmother in “Prince Charming” where she was billed Miss Number One, Amalia was formally introduced as Amalia Fuentes (she used her stepfather’s surname) in “Lydia”.

Then in the movie entitled “Movie Fan”, Amalia was launched to full stardom, together with Juancho Gutierrez. The rest was a series of successful starrers that saw Amalia the arch-rival of Susan Roces to the queenship of Philippine movies.

Unlike Susan who remained sweet and untarnished in image, Amalia fenced the controversial ways of a star. That time, siya ang unang tinawag na superstar na babae, a hot copy that she was, aside from the fact na noon, siya ang highest paid actress in her TIIP films, topped by her starring role in “Destination: Vietnam.”

Her marriage and break-up with reel boyfriend Romeo Vasquez enhanced to the fullest ang popularidad ni Amalia. Naging matagumpay din bilang producer si Amalia, commercially and on the quality side. Significantly, ang dalawang paboritong ginawa ni Amalia under her AM Productions ay ang “Ibulong Mo Sa Hangin” which earned kudos here and abroad at ang “Tatlong Kasaysayan Ng Pag-ibig”, both directed by ace megman Gerry de Leon. In the latter, Amalia shockedher followers by playing the role of a teenage prostitute in one of its episodes. But instead of losing her stature, higit na tiningala bilang aktres si Amalia.

For the record, Amalia won her first FAMAS best actress trophy in “Ibulong Mo Sa Hangin”. Not too mention na halos taun-taon noon, nominated si Amalia as best actress category.

Without Bobby, and as a family woman, ay masasabing tagumpay din si Amalia both as a doting mommy and father to her only daughter Liezl. As she always intimated to her chums, she has shortcomings as a person but as a mother, she keeps her best foot forward.

“I failed as a wife but I’ll try my best not to be a failure bilang ina ng aking anak,” says Amalia.

Although she rarely appears in flicks and hasn’t reactivated her movie firm, Nena has more than enough trophies, citations and the likes documenting her popularity, acting prowess and other achievements as an actress and as a producer. To name some: she won two awards for best actress (the FAMAS and Manila Filmfest). She was a consistent nominee year in and year out. Nena produced “Ibulong Mo Sa Hangin”, a critically acclaimed movie here and abroad. Nena spearheaded also the showing of local films in the United States for the Filipino community.

Many firsts wre tucked in Nena’s belt. She was the first in local tinseltown to be tagged superstar. At the height of her fame, Nena become the first highest paid actress via “Destination: Vietnam” and earlier than that in the TIIP tearjerker “Ako’y Iyung-Iyo”. The original controversial figure, Nena was chosen Asia’s most beautiful actress in a survey conducted by the prestigious Asia Magazine in the ‘60s, the first and hopefully not the last, accorded to a Filipino actress.

What counts is how you project the best in you and the accomplishments you have made through hardwork and dedication,” Amalia philosophized.

THE EXECUTIVE: ALEX, THE BIG BROTHER

It was in the early ‘7s when I got to know the real Alex Muhlach, that aloof-looking and reticent other Muhlach. Fresh from his studies and works in the United States, Alex exuded a composed, collected and learned young man appeal. Inside AM office, Alex displayed an American style in running the firm with conviction and discipline. A systematic mover, Alex found it hard to impose a western pattern in management.

Slowly, I enjoyed socializing with the showbiz people and speaking their lingo,” Alex said.

Recalling his first few years as the general manager of AM Productions, Alex admitte that he would not have resigned from his lucrative job in the United States were it not for Nena’s frantic overseas call.

Would you believe na gusto kong right then and there I’d enplane back” Ganyan kami ka-close ni Nena at napakasakit sa akin if she worried that much.

“Paunti-unti, muli kong napatatag ang AM at the expense of other people’s faults. I want others to do the same thing.

To prove it, Alex recounted that not lng after he ran AM office, the latter was back in the black again, with a series of hits. Nena recovered her lost ground in the movies, not to mention that with Alex’s moral boost, she withstood the stormy period of her life.

“Naging big brother ako kay Nena as far as her businesses were concerned those years. Not that walang alam si Nena na magpatakbo ng negosyo. More on theories siya. Binibigyan niya ako ng lahat ng kailangan ko, from a car to my clothes. I could not ask for more except when time came na nagkaroon ako ng sariling pamilya.

“Medyo nagkalapit sina Becky at Nena.

When NiƱo started to make a name in the movies, Alex doesn’t deny that the credit went to Nena via AM’s “May Lalaki sa Ilalim ng Kama Ko”. However, Ronnie Poe catapulted NiƱo to the top, no question about that.

Noon ngang magkagalit-galit kami, maraming nadamay at nasaktan. Puro hot-tempered kaming mga Muhlach. Now, I believe it’s the right time to paste back the broken pieces dahil nag-subside na ang mga init ng ulo namin. Infact, I’m willing to forget what transpired between us. It seems that Nena refuses to bury the hatchet, so to speak. For the time being, I expect the best for her and for NiƱo’s Wonder Films. Minsan, naiisip ko na the best thing that could happen to us ay kung tuluyan nang magkakasundu-sundo kami at magiging sister companies ang AM at Wonder. Am I expecting the impossible? I hope not. In spite of our differences, I can always be a big brother to Nena.”

Regarding his marital trouble with Becky which ended up with them parting ways, Alex hopefully pins hope on their possible reconciliation. As he puts it, theirs is a trial separation for them to analyze the pros and cons of their marriage.

THE WORK HORSE: CHENG, THE KID BROTHER

Those were the words uttered by Cheng Muhlach to many more than ten years ago, signifying how intense his feelings were for his sister then. Understandably so, Cheng acted as Nena’s bodyguard, chaperone and trouble shooter for that matter. With all the affection, blessings and rewarding things given to him by Nena, Cheng could simply reciprocate on those terms. Yet in the years that followed, Cheng became not a mere brother but a dependable, trusted and enterprising production manager of Nena’s outfit.

In contrast to Alex, even during his school days Cheng had been noted for his ruggedness, Cassanova image and trouble-prone self. In fairness to Cheng, however, he beats Alex in the camaraderie department. All through the years, he has that passion for helping and aiding any friend in distress for which he earns the respect of others.

Cool ako unless an nakataya an nag pagkalalaki ko,” Cheng sums up himself.

In the long time that Cheng worked for AM, he mentioned that Nena could never accuse him of neglecting his task or not going out of his way to iron out the kinks if these were visible.

Lagi akong nasa likod niya, nakaalalay. Basta may problems here and there sa cast, sa technical men o sa lahat sa production side, ako nag umaareglo. That’s why, I was deeply hurt an dahil lang sa maliit an misunderstanding naming dalawa ay mauuwi sa pag-split naming magkakapatid.”

On this ground, Cheng asserts that there’s no need to go into details on that highly publicized feud.

“Sooner or later, maaaring maayos an nag nasabing gulo. So it will be better an tight-lipped an ako about this. I’m more concerned sa pagkayod nang husto para sa hinaharap ko. Ibang-iba an ako ngayon. Not so long ago ay talagang carefree and I didn’t give a damn about myself. Parang one day millionaire ako noon.

Time came when Cheng felt being left alone. He had nothing to brag about, fiancial-wise.

“I finally woke up to the truth, I’m not getting any younger. Na-challenge ako sa sinabi ni Alex that if I wouldn’t change I’ll die penniless. Bigla akong nagtipid at nag-save ng money. Eventually, I’ve branched out sa other businesses. Ngayon, puwedeng sabihing hindi an ako pahuhuli kina Nena at Alex. Di ako kasing yaman nila pero at least mayroon an rin akong naipundar.

Would his loyalty and love for Nena engulf Cheng once more in the days to come?

“Mahirap nag magsalita pagkatapos ay di mapapatunayan. Basta on my part, all I can say is that once a brother, always a brother.”

FUTURE QUEEN: LIEZL, THE DAUGHTER

If Anna Lissa Muhlach Sumilang or simply Liezl would embark on movie acting, she could easily make it to the top without really trying hard. After all, since Liezl was a mere baby, she had already enthralled huge followers. No wonder, in her initial starrer “Portrait of an Angel” at the age of four, Liezl gave Snooky, the reigning top child star then, a stiff fight at the tills.

Despite lucrative movie offers, Nena reaffirmed her decision to let Liezl forego her career in favor of her studies in the USA and subsequently at the International School.

Liezl did quit the movies up to the present, but she has not been totally out of the limelight. The public has kept a watchful eye on her growing up into a radiant and stunning teener. Thanks to the pictorials and write-ups about Liezl which Amalia couldn’t turn down.

More than ever, this ’81 indicates more exposure on Liezl’s beauty and talents. Does it imply she’s all set to try the kleighlights anew?

Judging from the newly acquired gregarious and outgoing personality of Liezl (she used to be too shy and reticent), “puwedeng-puwede an siya sa pelikula,” so they say. Will Nena ever approve of it?

“It all depends on my daughter. Frustration ko nag magkaroon ng college degree that’s why I hope that thru Liezl matupad nag mga dreams ko for a college education. She is so talented, she can do almost anything,” says Nena.

Querried on that matter, Liezl admits, “Sometimes I imagine I’m a big star. The idea excites me, especially since all my friends in school have crushes on this and that young actor. But Mama is right – I’m not prepared for that kind of life. Right now, my studies is top priority and I will only consider the movies after I get a college education.

CAUGHT UNAWARE: NIƑO, THE MONEYMAKER

How does a kid like NiƱo Muhlach cope up with the often hurting, depressing and sinful movie world? With his alleged millions to boot, the adulation and all the luck showered him, can NiƱo ever live up normally? What’s really inside NiƱo?

October 27, 1972 was the first time I chanced upon NiƱo who turned one-year-old that day. A grandstand performer even at that tender age, what with his nonstop dancing, singing, imitating noted singers and other gimmicks, NiƱo was already predicted to be a phenomenal child star. From three benefactors, Amalia Fuentes to Ariel Ureta to Fernando Poe, Jr., three years later saw NiƱo emerge as the hottest moppet performer.

At first, detractors surmised that he would be good for a year’s time. They were wrong. Again, they opined that NiƱo would lose his appeal after three years. That guess was faulty for of late, in his sixth year as a moneymaker, NiƱo sustains his box office charisma. The question is, if he were not a Muhlach, would NiƱo become the superstar that he is? On the set of his latest assignment “Cuatro Y Media”, NiƱo paused for a while before he replied.

“I’m proud of being a Muhlach. Siguro kahit I’m talented di ako sisikat kung di ako Muhlach. Eh, di wala sana akong Tita Nena an superstar. Ng isang papa an tsampiyon sa marketing at ng isang uncle Cheng an number one bilang manager ko at PM ng Wonder Films.”

Showing his views as an actor, anyone who listens to NiƱo would not dispute his advance maturity, sometimes too advanced for comfort you’ll simply be amazed at those quotes that come from him.

“Intriga? Naku, masisira lang nag ulo pag pinatulan yan. When I was younger I got hurt and mad by such things. Now, I ignore them. Eh, mas sisikat ka pag iniintriga. Would you believe I’m more depressed pag wala akong pelikula? Kaya lagi akong may movies. Kaya lang, papa makes it a point an hindi magko-conflict sa schedules ko sa school. Di ako puedeng maglakuwatsa.

“About the sinful movie world, eh nasa tao yan. Kahit puro temptation nag nakapaligid sa iyo, you can avoid them if you have strong self-control. Tulad ko, nag liit ko pa ay exposed an ako sa mga green jokes and lately sa x-rated movies sa betamax. But I don’t take them seriously. You see, I’m a disciplinarian a trait which I inherited from my parents.”

On the other hand, NiƱo exclaim that no amount of adulation could daunt him and would somehow hamper his lifestyle.

“Sa labasng kamera I’m just one of the kids. I’m not affected by my star stature. That’s why offscreen, I’d like to be treated like anybody else. Another thing, I’m not lucky all the way. Look what happened to my parents. Nag dream ko, magkasundo uli sila. It so happens I understand their situation. Wala akong kinakampihan sa kanila.

“Sabi nila, mayamang-mayaman daw ako. Aywan, wala sa loob ko yan. When I grow up that’s the time I’ll think about my money. Nag importante sa akin these days ay nag studies ko, my movie career, aside from my parents and my brother Allan Ronald.”

What’s really inside NiƱo? This early, those who are attached to him admit that the boy has a knack for serious things and seemingly growing up to be a responsible and cultured teener.

“I think I’ll be more dedicated years from now, just like papa. Sana when that day comes, makikita ko an one big family kami – sina Tina Nena at Liezl, Tito Cheng and his family and our family.

ANOTHER NIƑO: ALLAN, THE LITTLE MUHLACH

During his first few movie appearances, NiƱo’s kid brother Allan Ronald had disappointed his parents. They categorized Allan as an ordinary tot who had no acting motivation. In other words, his parents thought the movies was not for Allan.

But Allan proved they were wrong while filming “Tikboy en Pamboy”. He surprised a lot of people, including megger Baby Navoa who didn’t expect that Allan would react favorably to his instructions.

Pero in fairness to Allan, he has a style of his own at ayaw niyang patalo kay NiƱo in front of the cameras. This was good dahil naging effective nag scenes ng dalawa,” Alex recalled.

Admittedly, Alex confirmed the reports that “Tikboy en Pamboy” grossed much more than what they guessed primarily because of moviegoers’ curiosity over Allan.

“Before its showing, sinabi ko sa aming mg checkers an tanungin nag manunuod kung bakit nila type nag said pic. Nang matapos nag showing, they reported to me an karamihan ay interesado kay Allan at nagustuhan nila nag bata dahil cute at listo din. Kaya nga bida si Allan sa next ng Wonder Films, nag “Tropang Bulilit” with NiƱo and other child stars,” Alex stressed.

Shall we say that in the years to come, Allan can duplicate or even surpass the record of his brother?

CONCEPCION A. FUENTES: THE MUHLACH’s MOTHER

According to Mrs. Fuentes, kung buhay pa nag papa ni Amalia, she would have never entered flickerville. He was conservative type an sobra nag pagiging disciplinarian.

A few years later, Amalia’s mother re-married Isagani Fuentes, a Protestant Minister. Ito rin nag dahilan kung bakit nakapag-aral si Amalia sa isang Protestant school, nag Philippine Christian College where she finished her high school.

Fate destined Mrs. Fuentes to be a widow again for the second time.

He’s only seventeen,” says Mrs. Fuentes.
