PRE-WAR FILIPINO MOVIES

Before the devastating World War II, Philippine film industry was a thriving industry. Film studios like Malayan Movies, Nolasco Films, Filippine Films, Sampaguita Pictures, LVN Pictures, Lebran and many others made films one after another, competing with each other, discovering new movie stars and directors. Most of the films made before the war were either lost or destroyed. A few survived (Pakiusap (1940), Tunay Na Ina (1939), Ang Ibong Adarna (1941), Giliw Ko (1939) and one recovered by film director Nick de Ocampo from the American Library of Congress (Zamboanga (1937). The same is true with post-war films, classics made by great Filipino directors Gerry de Leon, Lamberto Avellana, Manuel Conde, Gregorio Fernandez, Ramon Estella, Eduardo de Castro, were either lost or just waiting to be discovered from some film collectors' basements. Manuel Conde's "Genghis Khan" is with the French film archive, Gerry de Leon's "Sanda Wong" was recovered from Hong Kong, de Leon's "Banga Ni Zimadar" and "Dyesebel", and Fernando Poe's "Darna" were found by Howie Severino of GMA-7's "I-Witness" in Thailand film archive and the Thai government is willing to return these Filipino treasures if we have already our own film archive that will take care of them. We are still hopeful that many of our considered lost films will someday re-surface and be discovered by "film archaeologists".

Wow! Iam studying History of Theater and Film and I jst realize how rich and creative our Philippine Movie Industry was. I can't blame veteran Stars now when they compare the Stars of today from their generation.

HAYST!

Hi! Still very proud of my grandfather late Tor Villano who was one of the pioneers in Philippine Cinema...I remembered all those films that he took during war which we always watched together (I was his favorite apo hahahahahaha!!!)...I don't have any idea what happened to those films which he kept well covered inside our fridge and his film projectors...He used to tell me how he discovered Paraluman, the love story of Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran, and so many things...I miss my Daddy Taba (that's how we call him)....

I would like to know where I can get copies. Old from films. My Lola is Nati Rubi a pre war actress until 1953. It would be nice to watch her movies. I am told that some of her movies can be seen in TV under Old Classic movies.
